In work at height and rescue, a pulley has three basic functions: changing the direction of the rope, reducing friction thanks to the bearing on the sheave, and creating mechanical advantage in appropriate setups.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two basic types of pulley are the key to understanding the logic of the system. A fixed pulley is fixed to a point and only changes the direction of the force; it provides no gain in force (for example, lifting up by pulling down). A moving pulley, on the other hand, moves with the load and provides a gain in force. The combination of these two forms the mechanical advantage system called a block and tackle.<\/span><\/p><h2><b>What Is Mechanical Advantage?<\/b><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mechanical advantage is the reduction of the force the user must apply to lift a load, by appropriately arranging the pulley and rope system. It offers a good balance between efficiency and complexity.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>4:1 and higher systems:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Built for heavier loads, but require more rope distance and a more complex setup.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>A very important warning: these values are theoretical. The real force gain is always lower than the theoretical value due to friction in the pulley and rope system. High-efficiency pulleys with bearings reduce this loss.
