Lifelines are systems that provide a worker at height with a continuous anchor point along the line and safely hold the person in the event of a fall. They are basically divided along two axes: by direction into horizontal and vertical, and by permanence into fixed and mobile. What Is a Lifeline and How Does It Work?
A lifeline is a safety system to which the worker’s harness is attached and which allows free movement along the line. Throughout the work, the person advances without disconnecting from the line; in the event of a fall, the system engages and arrests the fall.
The system basically consists of the following components: the anchor points/brackets where the line is fixed to the structure, the steel rope or rail that runs along the line, the shuttle or rope grab to which the worker is attached and which moves along the line, and the energy absorber that absorbs the force generated during a fall. When a fall occurs, the rope grab/shuttle automatically locks on the line, arrests the fall, and distributes the force to multiple anchor points, reducing the load on both the person and the structure.
Horizontal Lifelines
Horizontal lifelines are used in areas where the worker moves laterally (horizontally). The most common places of use are roofs, crane runways, crane tops, and on-vehicle work areas.
The worker attaches the harness to the line via a shuttle and moves freely along the line without breaking the connection. Thanks to corner and turn anchors, the system can continue uninterrupted even at corners; the worker advances without getting caught on the intermediate brackets.
Horizontal lifelines are manufactured according to the EN 795:2012 standard. For systems used by more than one person at the same time, the CEN/TS 16415 requirement is additionally sought. These standards determine how many users the system is tested for and the installation/material quality.
Vertical Lifelines
Vertical lifelines are used in structures where the worker moves up and down (vertically). Typical places of use are ship-type ladders, towers, and poles.
The worker climbs by attaching the rope grab to the vertical line; they remain continuously secured throughout the climb. In the event of a fall, the rope grab locks on the line and holds the person suspended. In vertical systems, intermediate/guide brackets are used to prevent the rope from swinging due to effects such as wind, and the rope grab can pass over these brackets without being detached.
Vertical lifelines are evaluated according to the EN 353 standard. There is an important technical distinction here: rigid (fixed, rail-type) vertical lines are subject to the EN 353-1:2014+A1:2017 standard, while flexible (rope-type) vertical lines are subject to the EN 353-2 standard.
The Difference Between Fixed and Mobile Lifelines
While the horizontal-vertical distinction determines the direction of the line, the fixed-mobile distinction determines the permanence of the line.
Fixed (permanent/rigid) lifelines are systems permanently mounted to a structure. They are installed by the manufacturer or an authorized organization and put into continuous use by being fixed in place. They are preferred in places where work is regularly carried out at the same point (for example, a roof or tower requiring continuous maintenance); they do not require reinstallation each time.
Mobile (temporary/portable) lifelines are systems that are carried to where they are needed and set up temporarily. They provide flexibility on sites where the work area is constantly changing, in short-term jobs, or in rotating work at different points. In the construction sector, the combined use of mobile horizontal and vertical lines during construction activities is common.
Both horizontal and vertical lifelines can be designed as fixed or mobile. The right choice is made according to the duration of the work, the stability of the area, and the frequency of use.
How to Choose the Right Lifeline System?
The basic criteria to consider when choosing a lifeline:
- Direction of movement: If there is lateral movement, a horizontal line (EN 795) is needed; if there is up-and-down movement, a vertical line (EN 353) is needed.
- Need for permanence: A fixed system is suitable if there is continuous work in the same area; a mobile system is suitable for variable sites.
- Number of users: If more than one person will use it at the same time, the system must be tested for that number of users and (in horizontal) certified to CEN/TS 16415.
- Standard compliance: It is a legal requirement that the system has the correct EN certification according to its direction and type. The individual certification of components does not mean that the entire system is certified.
- Installation and periodic inspection: Lifelines must be installed by authorized persons and inspected regularly (usually every 6-12 months and after every fall).
