A rescue winch is a lifting and evacuation device used to raise or lower a person in a controlled manner in an emergency, whether they are working at height or in a confined space such as a well, tank, silo, or manhole. It is usually used together with a tripod, a portable anchor system: while the tripod creates a safe suspension point, the rescue winch quickly moves a fallen or trapped person to safe ground. This pair is the foundation of the rescue system that solves the real danger a fall arrest system cannot stop — a person remaining suspended or trapped in a confined space.

Why Is Fall Arrest Alone Not Enough?

A fall arrest system prevents a person from hitting the ground; but it leaves them suspended in the air or trapped inside a confined space. This is exactly where the real danger begins: suspension trauma can develop within minutes in a suspended worker, while a person in a confined space may face the risk of oxygen deficiency or toxic gas.

For this reason, fall arrest and rescue are two separate, complementary steps. It is not enough for the equipment to stop the person; a rescue system must also be ready to bring them to safe ground as quickly as possible. The rescue winch and tripod make this second step possible.

What Is a Tripod and What Is It For?

A tripod is a three-legged portable anchor system used to create a safe connection and suspension point at confined spaces or points of vertical entry and exit. Thanks to its adjustable leg structure, it can be set up on different grounds and openings.

Several elements are critical for the safe operation of a tripod: the legs sitting firmly and stably on the ground, the head height being correctly adjusted, and the connection points being appropriately selected. It is typically set up centered over narrow-mouthed confined spaces such as wells, manholes, silos, and tanks; thus providing a fixed upper point for both entry-exit and emergency evacuation.

A tripod is not a solution on its own. It must be considered as a system together with a winch, connection apparatus, harness, fall arrest device, and a written rescue procedure.

What Is a Rescue Winch and How Does It Work?

A rescue winch is the mechanism used to lower or raise personnel in a controlled manner. At confined space entries, a rescue winch must be kept ready so that rapid and controlled evacuation can be carried out in an emergency, even while personnel are working normally.

Rescue winches are evaluated in two classes according to their rescue function:

  • EN 1496 Class A: Provides only an upward lifting (raising for rescue) function.
  • EN 1496 Class B: Also allows short-distance, controlled lowering; that is, both raising and lowering can be performed.


Two types of setup are common in practice. In the first, a separate crank rescue winch is mounted on the tripod. In the second, there is a rescue function integrated into a retractable fall arrest: the device normally works like a retractable fall arrest (EN 360) and stops the person during a fall; then a crank or mechanism is engaged, it switches to winch mode, and the person is raised or lowered. Such devices carry both EN 360 and EN 1496 standards together.

Confined Space Rescue: Why a Separate Expertise?

Confined spaces (tanks, wells, silos, manholes, sewers) carry different and additional risks compared to work at height. When a narrow entry mouth, limited maneuvering space, oxygen deficiency, and the possibility of toxic gas come together, rescue becomes much more complex.

There is a critical rule in these environments: the rescuer must be able to perform the rescue without putting themselves at risk. An untrained person who enters to rescue someone trapped in a confined space often becomes the second victim. This is why the tripod and rescue winch enable the rescuer to perform controlled evacuation from the outside, without entering the space. This protects the lives of both the trapped person and the rescue team.

At confined space entries, the tripod and rescue winch must be set up and ready before work begins; it is too late to try to set them up when an emergency arises.

How to Choose the Right Tripod and Rescue Winch?

When choosing a system, it is not enough to look only at the leg height or winch length. The following elements must be evaluated together:

  • Entry opening and ground structure: The tripod’s leg spread must suit the entry mouth and ground of the work area.
  • Winch capacity and rope length: The total weight of the person and equipment to be rescued and the working depth must be taken into account.
  • Rescue class: Class A should be preferred if only lifting is sufficient; Class B if controlled lowering is also needed.
  • Connection points and compatibility: The tripod, winch, harness, and fall arrest device must be compatible with each other.
  • Number of users: EN 795 Type B portable anchors are usually designed on a single-user basis; if more than one person will be attached, compatibility must be checked.


In addition, devices with such complex mechanisms require periodic inspection and record-keeping (EN 365); the inspection interval is determined according to the manufacturer’s instructions and usage intensity. A visual and functional check before each use is essential.

The Rescue System Is Also a Whole

Just as in fall arrest, in rescue too, safety comes not from a single product but from a correctly designed system. Real protection is provided when the tripod, rescue winch, harness, fall arrest device, and written rescue plan work together.
